Mary had a little lamb asked:

From 1-10 could you in general rate the Harry Potter series and please explain why you did, what you like or dislike (I am an author. Not J.K. Rowling though. So honest answers). Also I would like to hear out your expectations when it comes to fantasy books. What has to be there and what has to be left out? This will help loads!
DON’T FORGET TO SAY WHY? PLEASE! I WOULD LIKE JUSTIFICATIONS TO YOUR OPINIONS!

When I was with my ex girlfriend her then 7 year daughter loved them so I will rate them a 10

I rate it a 8.

The books themselves are a good entertaining read. The series as a whole starts off slowly. It really progresses in the later books and begins to tie everything together. I rate it low because some things just seem a bit predicable.

Ok honestly I rater Harry Potter series a 10+ because it keeps you on your toes. Hermoine is awsome as well as all the magic that goes on

I would rate it a 9. Here are my reasons:

great book! there is a lot of adventure and suspense

Story is detailed, but not to the point it is difficult to read (ie Lord of the rings Trilogy)

Great characters… you learn more about them as the stories go on

the “mythical” creatures are very well described, so you know exactly what they would look like.

The only thing i have a problem with is that Harry, Ron & Hermoine seem to bicker a lot. Other than that, its one of my favorite series :)

At least 9 out of 10.

They can be enjoyed by adults as well as children and there is a lot of wit and humour in them without them playing for laughs as per the Terry Pratchett novels.

Why they work best for me as fantasy novels is that Rowling has spent a lot of time thinking about the whole Wizard world. It has a coherence and integrity not often found in fantasy novels except for LOTR. In other words characters, creatures and mythologies independently “exist” outside the books - other stories could be told about Harry’s world (although I hope she does not milk it in the way that Tolkien’s successors did). Pullman’s Dark Materials series, despite its literary qualities, failed for me because of its lack of mythological depth (and lack of humour)

it’s WAY beyond 10 but i have to give them a 10. They are filled with a little bit of everything so it satisfies everyones needs. it has romance, is a thriller, action, fantasy, etc. The book is also filled with vivid datail and jk rowling does and excellent job wrapping up the entire book at the end and make sure everything makes sense, no matter what. Also, another reason is because Harry Potter is a creative wonderful new idea that i’m sure it would take people years to come up with to turn into a book. I mean, who has heard of a book where you travel back in time to save an inncoent prisonerby riding on a hyppogriff with one of your best friends. Also, it’s excellent how harry, ron, and hermionie display true friendship to the world and shows how friends stick together. The Harry potter series definitely gets to the point where the good will always win.

i rate the books a 10. the reason is that the books aren’t just fantasy. she hits on the basic human traits that all of us have experienced either first hand or witnessed a friend or family member deal with : loss of a family member
feeling as though the weight of the world is on your shoulders
meeting and keeping true friends and expanding your family through choice.
i could keep going but i think that should give you an idea.

oh also she has the universal good vs. evil, but good doesn’t win easily.

I like them, but I can’t give an over all rating. Each book is different and I like them differently. For example: I loved the 4th book so I would give it a 9/10. But the 5th book would get a 5/10.

I think around an 8.
Rowling scores points for getting young people reading, and the HP series is well thought out, especially considering that it’s geared towards younger folks. I’ve read pulp novels written for an adult audience that had paper-thin plotlines and plot-holes big enough to fly a 747 through.
I won’t give a 10 because there’s nothing deeper that a bunch of kids and their adventures. Rowling’s good, but she’s no Dickens.
Also, I had to deduct points for Harry’s taking forever and a day to come around and realize he digs on that foxy redhead, Ginny. I mean, come on…she’s a redhead. Now it’s too late and he can’t roll with her because he’s got a higher purpose.

Sorcerer’s Stone: 6- Not bad, it was a good beginning of the series and gave really good details.
Chamber of Secrets: 6- It was good, but lacked a little something in the plot.
Prisoner of Azkaban: 10- This one was my favorite, it gave great details, thickened the plot, and kept you hooked on the series.
Goblet of Fire: 8- It was good, but seemed to run on a bit, great details and left you guessing.
Order of the Phoenix: 8 1/2- Really good descriptions, and had awesome action. Really good!!!
Half-Blood Prince: 7- Nice writing, but lacked something in the story. Very compellling, but upsetting at the same time.

In Fantasy, you need to combine about 3 plots into one. It should have many characters with complicated relationships, and possibly a secret language. There has to be a large complication with villains, and possibly go on about 4 books.
Good Luck!!!!!!

9/10 awsome books, great characters, good suspense.

PsYcHo on 7 March, 2009 at 12:20 am #

I’d give 10++++ im a big fan of harry potter…the books and movies make use of not so complicated english so children and adults both can understand…as for fantasy books..u could write something that can be easily understand and imagined…it’ll be fun and more people would like also put some suspension..once a person read yr book they can never leave it…

DannyOcean on 9 March, 2009 at 2:37 am #
